Protecting the Cultural Heritage of the Islamic World
the barakat trust
who are we?
As an arts and heritage charity, The Barakat Trust works to protect, promote, and study the art, architecture, and heritage of the Islamic world. In almost 40 years we have supported over 900 projects across dozens of countries. Our projects include rescue conservation work on sites that face destruction; training workshops that teach communities how to protect their heritage; archaeological excavations and major academic studies to improve our knowledge of the subject; studentships to train the next generation of specialists; and the development of publications, museum events, and even a major video game to drive forward public appreciation of this beautiful part of art history.
why are we needed?
In recent years, parts of the Islamic world have suffered from the deliberate destruction and looting of cultural heritage – “a form of cultural cleansing,” as UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova branded it. There is more need now than ever to protect these sites through conservation, rescue archaeology, and digitisation, as well as to strengthen knowledge of this heritage through museum programmes, public engagement work, publications, studentship awards, and more. It is a vital duty of humanity to protect the world’s heritage for the next generation, and ensure its knowledge is passed on.
What is "Islamic Art?"
It’s a complicated term. It broadly refers to art made within the Islamic world, by Muslim or non-Muslims – but it does not always mean religious art. Islamic Art can as much include a textile depicting ancient Egyptian gods woven in 20th century Egypt, or an ornate manuscript with colourful scenes of Iranian legends, as it can a beautiful Turkish mosque. As the religion of Islam has moved across the globe, it has brought various cultural facets with it – including visual trends and artistic traditions. This complex of beautiful styles and shared skills, though varied and diverse, is what we today call Islamic art.
